KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Anyone present on University of Kansas campuses is now required to wear a face mask.
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Barbara A. Bichelmeyer made the announcement through an email to campus staff and students.
The university is working on a policy for new public safety requirements because of COVID-19, but the mask policy is being implemented in the meantime under the University Emergency Management Plan.
The requirement will apply to all faculty, staff, students, affiliates, visitors, vendors and volunteers, according to the email.
A face covering must be worn in common areas and within six feet of any person anywhere on campus.
"Jayhawks, this policy relies on your thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation. The health and safety of each Jayhawk, depends on the practices of all Jayhawks," Bichelmeyer said in the email.
Violations of the new policy will be reported to Human Resource Management or Student Affairs.
Kansas State University says it also plans to require individuals to wear masks when they cannot maintain 6 feet of social distance and/or there is a legitimate health and safety reason to require face coverings.
