KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A second inmate who tested positive for COVID-19 at Lansing Correctional Facility has died.
Kansas Department of Corrections officials announced the first inmate death from the coronavirus pandemic earlier this week.
He also was imprisoned at Lansing Correctional, where 151 positive COVID-19 cases have been identified.
The inmate death KDOC announced Wednesday was a 60-year-old man with underlying medical conditions, who tested positive April 25 for the coronavirus.
He had been transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center on April 24 and officially died of natural causes.
The man, who had been in prison since 1999, was serving life in prison after being convicted of two counts of robbery, five counts of aggravated burglary, four counts of kidnapping, 12 counts of rape, two counts of sexual battery, three counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and two counts of drug possession, according to the Department of Corrections.
The KDOC is not releasing the man’s name.
Lansing Correctional, which is the oldest and largest prison in Kansas, is one of four KDOC facilities with confirmed COVID-19 positive cases. That includes the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Facility, where a staff member has tested positive.
To date, 75 staff members and 76 residents there have tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus at Lansing Correctional, including 15 staff members who have returned to work and 49 inmates who have recovered.
