Bowman said the move has been in place for months, but it is beneficial given the COVID-19 virus.
Currently, there are 40 inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19, along with 47 staff members at the Lansing facility.
Bowman said a message to family and inmates will go out Tuesday afternoon to explain the process of the move.
