KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Leavenworth County Board of County Commissioners voted Thursday to amend Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly's order mandating masks in public spaces, making the use of masks a recommendation rather than a requirement.
While Kelly’s order went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, counties had the option to override the mandate.
In the Kansas City metro, Johnson and Wyandotte counties adopted the governor’s order.
On the Missouri side, both Jackson County and Kansas City, Missouri, have enacted mask requirements, along with North Kansas City.
Clay County amended its public order to make masks a requirement for any business that wants to reopen at full capacity. If businesses choose not to require masks, they must remain at a 50% occupancy limit.
The Platte County Health Department said Thursday that it “strongly encourages” the use of face masks but stopped short of issuing an order to require it.
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has said he does not plan to issue a statewide order requiring the use of masks in public spaces.
