Live blog: Jackson County Sheriff reports COVID-19 case at detention center

Missouri has topped 4,000 total COVID-19 cases

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, continues to spread across the world, and in Missouri and Kansas.

41 Action News is keeping track of all closings and cancellations, as well as tracking where positive coronavirus cases are located.

We are also keeping track of which metro jurisdictions are under stay at home orders for the foreseeable future, only allowing for essential business and activities.

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for April 11.

7:02 p.m. | A "non-inmate" at the Jackson County Detention Center has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Jackson County, Missouri, Sheriff Darryl Forte. In a tweet posted Saturday night, Forte said that they are "working in conjunction w/local public health to identify all close contacts and determine necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease."

3:16 p.m. | RideKC service in Johnson County will be reduced beginning on April 13. Most routes with service every 30 minutes will be reduced to hourly, according to a bulletin on RideKC's website.

2:46 p.m. | The number of deaths in Missouri spiked to 117 with 4,079 confirmed COVID-19 cases, combining data from the state's afternoon update with supplemental reporting by various health departments across the state.

1:48 p.m. | The Jackson County Health Department is now reporting 217 positive COVID-19 cases, an increase of 18 from Friday. That puts Missouri over 4,000 confirmed cases in the state.

There also were two new deaths reported by the county.

1:37 p.m. | Four more deaths and 15 new positive COVID-19 cases have been reported in Wyandotte County, according to new data released by the county health department. The county now has 315 confirmed cases and 24 deaths.

There are currently 1,275 cases and 55 reported deaths in Kansas, according to the latest information from state and county health departments.

1:00 p.m. | The Kansas Department of Health and Environmentreports 55 deaths across the state, and 1,268 cases from 61 counties.

12 p.m. | Johns Hopkins University reported that the U.S. has overtaken Italy for the highest death toll in the world from the coronavirus.

11 a.m. | Johnson County, Kansas is reporting another death due to COVID-19, bringing that total to 13. They are also now reporting 281 positive cases of COVID-19 in the county.
