10:15 a.m. | Kansas will allocate $8 million in federal funds through the CARES Act to cover health care expenses for essential workers who have contracted COVID-19.

Assistance through the "Hero Relief Program" will be available for those in fields including health care and emergency services; first responders; agriculture and food production; food service; government workers; education; military; licensed child care and more. Individuals must have a positive COVID-19 diagnosis and verify essential worker status to apply.

For those with no health care coverage, assistance will be limited to qualifying medical expense payouts of $25,000. Those who are insured are eligible for up to $15,000.

“In these challenging and uncertain times, the thing we all hold fastest to is our health,” Gov. Laura Kelly said in a news release. “It’s time to show our gratitude and compassion to the workers and the families who need it most right now and who show their compassion for all of us every day.”
