Live blog: KC metro reports 9 new COVID-19 deaths

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, continues to spread across the world, and in Missouri and Kansas.

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for Sept. 1.

4:40 p.m. | The seven-county Kansas City metro reported 157 new COVID-19 cases and nine additional deaths on Tuesday, including five deaths in Kansas City, Missouri. Clay, Johnson, Wyandotte and Jackson counties each reported one additional death.

In Kansas, 218 new cases were reported and four additional deaths. The state does not report new data on Tuesdays.

Missouri added 1,411 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday and 22 additional deaths. Hospitalizations dipped below 1,000 after climbing last week. —AW

1:02 p.m. | The Excelsior Springs football coaching staff has been released from a precautionary quarantine.

The entire Tigers football team was asked to quarantine after possible exposure Friday during a season-opening 33-21 win at Savannah, where two new COVID-19 cases were reported Monday among students.

The Clay County Public Health Center released the coaching staff from quarantine Tuesday after the Excelsior Springs School District confirmed to health officials that the coaches had no contact with Savannah players, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page. — TP

12:30 p.m. | A third leading candidate COVID-19 vaccine has entered a final stage of human testing in the United States.
AstraZeneca announced its potential COVID-19 vaccine has entered final trials in the U.S. to test the effectiveness and safety of the product. —AW

10:30 a.m. | The annual Royals FanFest will not be held in 2021. Thousands attend the event each year, and the club determined it “would not be possible” to hold FanFest in-person in January. Also Tuesday, the Royals announced dates for the 2022 FanFest. — AW

8:45 a.m. | University of Kansas Health System officials gave their daily COVID-19 update and were joined by a virus survivor. - KB

Answering COVID-19 questions

7 a.m. | Johnson County is reminding organizations and businesses that the deadline to request personal protective equipment is Friday, Sept. 4.

Businesses and organizations can request up to a 90-day supply of PPE, which includes disposable masks, face shields and cloth gowns.
