Live blog: NKC football fans not allowed at Friday's away game

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for Sept. 9.

9:25 p.m. | North Kansas City High School football fans will not be allowed to attend Friday's away-game against Fort Osage due to restrictions in Jackson County, according to David Garrison, NKC Schools athletics director.

However, he said the game will be streamed online.

Garrison said fans also will not be allowed at Thursday night's volleyball matches. -KW

6 p.m. | The Shawnee Mission School District reversed course on Wednesday and will allow fall athletics to continue amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In a special meeting, the district’s Board of Education voted 5-2 to allow fall sports to resume, which goes into effect immediately.

Also Wednesday, Superintendent Mike Fulton said the district will begin transitioning elementary students to in-person learning, with a hybrid schedule set to begin in early October. —AW

3:30 p.m. | Three days before the University of Kansas Jayhawks football team is slated to kick off its season Saturday against Coastal Carolina, the team announced Wednesday three players have tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement, an athletics spokesperson said Saturday's game, slated for a 9 p.m. start, is still on.

Earlier Wednesday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced detailed information on the state's active COVID-19 case cluster locations. The list included the KU football team, with 14 cases, which dates back to mid-August and includes players, coaches, staff and student workers. - SH

12:28 p.m. | On Mondays beginning Sept. 14, two Johnson County Motor Vehicle offices will be closed in order to process drop off titles. The drop off services began in response to COVID-19 closures and has become extremely popular. The two locations closing on Mondays are listed below. -KB

  • Mission Motor Vehicle Office, 6000 Lamar Avenue
  • Olathe Motor Vehicle Office, 782 N. Ridgeview Road

11:30 a.m. | The Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education will hold a special meeting Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Superintendent Mike Fulton is expected to provide an update on the district’s reopening plan.

Athletics and Activities Director Richard Kramer will then join him for an update on sports and other extracurriculars.

“Possible action may be taken” in that area, according to the board’s agenda. — HG

10 a.m. | The mask mandate in Branson has been extended to Oct. 15. The Board of Aldermen voted 5-1 to extend the order requiring face coverings in public spaces at its regular meeting Tuesday. Alderman Larry Milton voted no on both reads of the ordinance.

As of Wednesday morning, Taney County had reported 976 cases of COVID-19 and 22 deaths from the virus, according to data kept by 41 Action News. —AW

9:04 a.m. | The city of Independence has canceled its annual Halloween Parade for 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The event was supposed to take place on Saturday, Oct. 31. Organizers said it will be back in 2021. -KB

41 Action News Latest Headlines | September 9, 6am

7:15 a.m. | Using state and local data, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association found that there have been nearly 500,000 coronavirus infections among children since the start of the pandemic. The findings were for known coronavirus cases through Sept. 3. -KB

7 a.m. | During the pandemic, Harvesters is distributing around 6.5 million pounds of food per month to Kansas City families in need. The organization would normally distribute around 1 million pounds per week. -KB
