KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new app developed by OurStreets is helping shoppers track which stores have the supplies they need.

The free app was created by developers in Washington, D.C. with the main purpose of reporting and tracking dangerous driving habits.

According to the app's website, COVID-19 evolved the purpose of the technology into a supply tracker for people having a tough time finding what they need in stores.

The app developers partnered with organizations across the country focused on safe transportation, including Kansas City's BikeWalkKC.

Eric Rogers, executive director and co-founder of BikeWalkKC, said the app is great for many people who don't have the luxury of a car to drive to multiple stores to find what they need.

"A lot of the folks we advocate for are relying on things like walking, biking, public transit. And so people in that position have a tougher time if you have to travel miles and miles and go to three or four stores to find everything you need," he said.

According to Rogers, more people who normally drive are now walking and biking to save money on gas.

Rogers explained how the app works.

"When you're out shopping at the grocery store or any other type of store, you can report when you find things like toilet paper or different types of frozen foods and any kind of supplies you might need."

The OurStreets app can be downloaded in the Google Play and Apple App store.
