KANSAS CITY, Mo. — North Kansas City Schools will begin the year under a hybrid model, with older students attending classes in-person two days a week and younger students in schools full-time, the district announced Wednesday.
In a message to parents, the district said that children in grades 6-12 will begin the school year on Sept. 8 under Scenario 2, which means they will attend classes in-person twice a week and learn virtually the other three days.
Students in Group A, whose last names begin with the letters A-K, will attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays. Students in Group B, with the last names L-Z, will attend on Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, school buildings will be deep cleaned.
Fall athletics and activities will continue with safety protocols in place, according to the district.
Students in preschool through fifth grade will attend school in-person five days a week, with additional cleanings to be done in the evenings.
Superintendent Dan Clemens and district leadership provided details on the plan at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night.
The plan was made following the district’s own criteria and COVID-19 data from the Clay County and Kansas City, Missouri, health departments. Currently, the area is "at a medium level of overall disease activity," the district said.
“The community’s flexibility and continued support for NKC Schools is greatly appreciated,” the district said in its message to parents. “We know that it will certainly be an unusual start to the school year, but our teachers, staff and schools are looking forward to welcoming our students on Tuesday, September 8.”
