KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Organizers announced Tuesday the Star Spangled Spectacular in Overland Park will not take place on July 4.

The show, which happens at Corporate Woods Founders’ Park each year, was going to be a “fireworks-only celebration” this year.

Organizers previously said the show would go on with significant alterations to usual festivities, including exclusion of live music, beer vendors and food trucks.

Guests had been encouraged to socially distance at the park while watching the show.

But a recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Johnson County and Kansas as a whole prompted organizers to cancel the celebration, a news release said, due to the "additional public health risk."

Organizers said the Star Spangled Spectacular will return in 2021.
