KANSAS CITY, Mo. — During the coronavirus pandemic, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City has had to change the way it is supporting families.

Instead of accepting new families in its homes, the nonprofit has been housing families at nearby hotels.

According to CEO Tami Greenberg, Ronald McDonald House has helped 130 families by renting 900 nights of hotel rooms.

"Childhood illness does not take a break for a global pandemic and, for those families who need us, they need us now more than ever," Greenberg said.

Demand over the last two months has decreased due to hospitals suspending elective surgeries, but as hospitals slowly start to allow different procedures and surgeries, the Ronald McDonald House expects the demand to increase.

"All of us are figuring out how we can do more safely — serve more families and kids safely, identifying what the stages are, the steps are," Greenberg said.
