KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A rapid spike of COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, Kansas, is forcing school district leaders to re-evaluate how best to educate students.

The Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education announced Friday morning plans to hold a special meeting at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10 to discuss the district’s COVID-19 gating criteria.

According to an agenda, the discussion will involve health officials from the Johnson County, Kansas, Department of Health and Environment.

Data released throughout the week by JCDHE painted an increasingly bleak picture as the county’s incidence rate and percent positivity rate have both increased markedly, putting the county in the red zone.

Despite the updated classification, JCDHE says it is still up to each school district to make its own decision.

On Thursday, the Spring Hill School District Board of Education announced it would review its gating criteria next week.
