KANSAS CITY, Mo. — All summer conditioning has been halted at Shawnee Mission East after two athletes tested positive for COVID-19.

A spokesman for the Shawnee Mission School District confirmed Friday that the conditioning program, which is mandatory for students hoping to participate in school-sponsored athletics, was suspended and will remain suspended through at least the weekend.

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment will perform contact tracing in an effort to contain any possible spread.

The SMSD spokesman would not say which sport or sports the athletes played.

The district’s coaches are responsible for supervising the athletes, ensuring that sanitizing protocols and social-distancing efforts are maintained during the workouts.
