KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Shawnee Mission School District police officers will issue trespassing citations to people who violate social distancing guidelines on its property.

Beginning on Tuesday, anyone who continues “to violate guidelines for use of district stadiums and athletic facilities” will be cited, according to a statement from SMSD.

“This is a step that we would have preferred not to take, but given the on-going lack of adherence to personal distancing guidelines, it has become necessary,” the district said.

SMSD and local police departments have received “numerous complaints” about people not adhering to the instructions, which have been put in place to prevent the transmission of the novel coronavirus. The complaints include reports of “large groups playing organized sports on SMSD fields,” according to the district.

“Groups of more than 10 people, individuals closer than six feet together, and sports where multiple individuals touch a common object (ball, bat, etc.) all present opportunities for transmission,” the district said.

Stadiums and athletic facilities will remain open, but social distancing guidelines – keeping six feet between people who do not live in the same household – must be adhered to.

Additionally, no team sports can be played.
