KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Special Olympics Missouri on Wednesday provided more details about the 2020 State Summer Games, which will be held virtually for the first time this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The games will give athletes the opportunity to compete in various events from their homes. Athletes will compete in their events on May 16-18 and submit their scores for each event in which they participate.

Results will be announced on Facebook Live on June 6.

The nine non-traditional events in the 2020 Virtual Summer Games include planking, speed dribble (basketball), standing long jump, run/walk/roll (150 feet), run/walk/roll (75 feet), wall sits, volleyball set/bump, swimming kicks, and soccer juggling.

The organization said it chose those events because they don’t require much equipment and can easily be done from home.

The Virtual Summer Games will kick off on Facebook Live at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, with an opening ceremony, which will include a law enforcement torch run to be done virtually and a special guest declaring the games officially open.

The organization previously said it made the decision to hold the Summer Games virtually to keep the fall sports schedule intact.
