KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More staff and inmates at the Lansing Correctional Facility have tested positive for COVID-19.

As of Friday, 39 staff members and 30 inmates tested positive. This is a spike of at least 30 cases in less than a week.

In a letter sent to families with loved ones in the facility, the director of the Kansas Department of Corrections said medical personnel are working to keep up with the growing demand.

Those who have tested positive are being quarantined in the new Lansing prison building being built. The Kansas Department of Corrections says moving the inmates to Lansing means they'll have better medical care.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is also working with the DOC to see if early release for some prisoners could help stop the spread.

Lansing is the only prison facility in Kansas dealing with a coronavirus outbreak.
