KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The first COVID-19 death has occurred in the Springfield area.

In a press conference Monday night, Clay Goddard, Springfield-Greene County Health Department director, said the patient was a woman in her 80s who was one of four patients from an assisted-living facility.

The three other patients from the facility have been hospitalized.

“This is a sobering reminder of what we are fighting through, and I mean we,” Goddard said. “It will take each and every one of us fighting against this illness. It will take each and every one of us making sacrifices in the short term so we can flatten the curve.”

As of Monday night, Greene County had recorded 17 cases of the novel coronavirus.

This death is the fifth in Missouri.
