KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One of the members of The Elders, a Kansas City Irish American folk rock band, died this week after complications from COVID-19, the group said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Our beautiful brother Steve Phillips passed away last night,” the band wrote on Facebook.

According to the post, Phillips, a guitarist for The Elders, had battled pulmonary fibrosis “for quite a while” and recently contracted COVID-19.

It was “finally too much for him to handle,” the band said.

Phillips is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren, according to the band.

The Elders, which have their musical roots in American and Celtic folk rock, have toured in the U.S. and Europe. The band regularly performs in the Kansas City area, including at the last few Plaza Lighting ceremonies on Thanksgiving.
