KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Middle and high school students in Unified School District 232 will transition to remote learning beginning Nov. 30 in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19.
The district voted Monday night to make the change during a special meeting for the Board of Education.
In a statement issued ahead of the meeting, USD 232 said community spread is “evident” within the district.
“The number of individuals recommended for quarantine and isolation jumped by 150 students and 24 employees in just one week,” the statement said. “Another growing concern is the district’s continued ability to staff teacher absences with substitute teachers. On a daily basis there are not enough substitutes available to fill teacher absences, as the pool of available subs continues to dwindle across the metro area.”
As of Nov. 11, USD 232 has quarantined 390 students and 77 staff members and had 114 students and 38 staff in isolation, according to the district’s COVID-19 dashboard.
The meeting was called so the board could address recommendations based on gating criteria at the state level.
