KANSAS CITY, Mo. — To help lighten the mood for families and children during city and statewide stay-at-home orders, the Brookside Soccer Club is going around surprising families.

"Soccer is a universal sport," Nick Garcia said. "This [coronavirus] pandemic is a universal issue, so I think there are some similarities and the end of the day, we just want them to know we are there for them."

Garcia is the executive director of the Brookside Soccer Club, a nonprofit and volunteer-run soccer club. While it had to postpone its spring season in the wake of COVID-19, the club decided to team up with local businesses to surprise families who are celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.

"We’re going through this different time," Garcia said. "We still need to celebrate and recognize anniversaries and birthdays and special celebrations."

The club has received dozens of requests for surprises. So far, it has partnered up with Underdog Wine, the Roasterie and Somerset Family Dentistry.
