KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police in Merriam, Kansas, are offering a special birthday surprise for those children who would normally be celebrating with a party.

Gatherings in Johnson County have been limited and residents are asked to stay home to help flatten the curve and prevent the spread of COVID-19 — making a birthday celebration difficult.

The Merriam Police Department said officers will drive by children's houses in a parade with lights ablaze and sirens blaring if they're celebrating a birthday during this time.

The department noted in its Facebook post the parades are specifically for kids in Merriam who are unable to have a party.

Those interested should contact Capt. Chris Brokaw by calling 913-322-5566, or via email at cbrokaw@merriam.org.

Merriam police said they would hold the parades until the end of the coronavirus pandemic.

That department isn't the only one to get in on the fun.

Fire trucks and some other vehicles from the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department joined a line of cars filled with family and friends to help Millie Jenkins celebrate her 6th birthday in the Northland.

The family had to cancel a trip to Disney World.

Millie's mom said she was thrilled with the surprise birthday of 25 cars with signs and presents.
