KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The number of COVID-19 cases in Wyandotte County is trending upward, according to new data from the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas, Public Health Department.

UGPHD Chief Epidemiologist Elizabeth Groenweghe said county health officials use a seven-day rolling average to better gauge trends in case numbers.

Groenweghe said before Wyandotte County entered Phase 3 of reopening on June 8, the averages had begun to stabilize.

Though county health officials hoped they’d see a decline in the number of positive tests, the numbers have increased in the last week.

UGPHD Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Greiner attributes the increase to a “sense of normalcy” that comes with reopening, causing people “to relax on safety measures.”

Greiner encouraged people to continue to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, cover coughs and sneezes, and frequently wash hands.

Health officials said the county would remain in Phase 3 until at least June 22, and will likely remain there if case numbers continue to increase.

Greiner also said a larger spike could force the county back into a more restrictive phase.
