KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Business owners can learn from other business owners Tuesday in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Wyandotte County Health Department is hosting a virtual town hall meeting to help businesses get through the coronavirus pandemic.

Specifically, Tuesday’s forum is focused on helping employers understand what to do when an employee tests positive, and how to safely reopen.

A spokesperson from the health department said the agency is getting a lot of the same questions about COVID-19, so it’s inviting businesses to all learn at once.

The health department has documented several outbreaks of COVID-19 at workplaces like retail stores, churches, factories and long-term care facilities.

During the virtual event, two businesses that have handled outbreaks will share their experiences.

The owner of Slap’s BBQ on Central Avenue is eager to hear those stories.

Joe Pearce said COVID-19 has already flipped his barbecue restaurant upside down, now he’s looking for any helpful insights.

“I think we have to be proactive in these situations,” the owner of Slap’s explained. “We are really a day to day business. We don’t know what tomorrow is going to hold, there is a lot of craziness going on here before the elections. Next thing you know, we just have to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves, our employees and serving fresh barbecue every day.”

Pearce said no employee at Slap’s has tested positive for COVID-19.

The virtual town hall runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m. RSVP online and visit the event page to learn more. You can also view the Zoom meeting online.

The health department is planning a second similar town hall in Spanish later this month.
