1 teen dead, 1 other injured in shootout Friday night in Kansas City's Historic Northeast neighborhood

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One teen died and a second was injured in a shootout Friday evening in east Kansas City, Missouri.

The shooting unfolded just before 6 p.m. in the 6000 block of east 13th Street, police said.

Officers arrived at the scene and located a teen unresponsive near a vehicle that had crashed into a pole.

Police said the teens exchanged gunfire with another vehicle, and the shooting was targeted.

One of the victims was transported to an area hospital and later died. He was identified as 15-year-old Aaron Amparan.

Police located a second victim, who was taken to an area hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

Police initially said three people had been injured in the shooting.

There was no immediate word on what led to the violence.

On Monday, police updated that a person of interest in the shooting was in custody.

The shooting Friday evening marked the city's 159th homicide of 2023.

At this time in 2020 — the city's deadliest year — KCMO had recorded 157 homicides.
