KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Officials say at least one Independence police officer shot a man Tuesday night after the suspect allegedly pulled a gun on the officer.
Independence police spokesman Officer John Syme said officers pulled over a car at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday near Oak Hill Cluster and Missouri Highway 7.
Syme the driver jumped out and ran. Officers said the man pulled out a gun during the chase and pointed it at them.
At least one officer shot the man, according to Syme.
The suspect was taken to a hospital. There's no word on his condition. Police have not yet publicly identified the man.
There may have been a second person in the car, but Syme said the investigation focused on the crime scene Tuesday night.
"Physical evidence is one of the first things they're going to look into, but we also want to look up any digital evidence as well. We want to see if any footage captured shows what happened because that's going to give us more details," Syme said.
Police haven't said why officers pulled the car over in the first place. Syme said officers were in the area doing proactive policing.
The officers involved were not injured.
