KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former Fort Riley soldier will spend 30 years behind bars for distributing information on how to make bombs, U.S. Attorney for Kansas Stephen McAllister announced Wednesday.
Last September, Jarrett William Smith, 24, was accused of discussing plans "to kill far-left-leaning 'antifa' activists," according to reporting by the Associated Press.
Federal authorities said Smith described how to build a bomb that could be triggered by calling a cellphone.
Smith was accused of posting on Facebook that he wanted to travel to Ukraine to fight with a paramilitary group known as “Azov Batallion.”
Last September Smith sent a person working undercover for the FBI specific instructions for making an explosive device, according to the attorney’s office.
On Wednesday, Smith pleaded to two counts of distributing information related to explosives, destructive devices and weapons of mass destruction.
Smith will also have to serve an additional three years of supervised release once his sentence is complete.
