KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend after tracking her to a friend’s home early Sunday morning, according to prosecutors and court records.

KCPD officers responded to a shooting shortly before 4 a.m. in the 7100 block of Bales Avenue, where three people in the home said that a man named “Carlos” had fatally shot 25-year-old Briana Johnson. The witnesses identified the suspect, 27-year-old DeCarlos Carrell, as Johnson’s boyfriend.

A next-door neighbor told police that a man had come to the door shortly before the shooting and asked for Briana, saying his name was Carlos. Surveillance video from the neighbor’s house also showed the man walking next door before running down the street and shooting into a vehicle.

Witnesses inside the home told police that Johnson and a friend had gone out for the evening and later came back to the residence on Bales Avenue. Johnson was sleeping on the couch in the front room when a man came to the front door armed with a gun and yelling, “I know she [sic] in there,” according to court records.

Witnesses said they heard four or five gunshots and found Johnson shot in the living room. A half-dozen bullet holes also were found on the driver’s door and window of a vehicle parked outside the home.

Police traced a suspect vehicle seen in the neighborhood to Carrell. He was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action.

According to Jackson County prosecutors, Carrell had two recent firearm convictions.

Prosecutors requested a $150,000 bond for Carrell.
