KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man was charged in the shooting of a police officer and a bus driver on Thursday morning in the Historic Northeast District.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Friday that Justin Rogers, 25, was charged with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action.
Rogers was shot by police in an exchange of gunfire after he shot both the officer and the bus driver, according to police and court records. He was transported to an area hospital after the shooting.
According to a probable cause statement, two witnesses, including the bus driver, saw Rogers take a wallet from a man at a bus stop on Wilson Avenue.
When Rogers got on the bus, the driver contacted her supervisor, who alerted police. When the driver stopped the bus at Independence and Hardesty avenues, Rogers asked why the bus had stopped, and the driver told him there was an issue with the bus.
Two officers arrived, and when one of the officers tried to get on the bus, Rogers shot him, according to a probable cause statement. One witness told police that the officer who got on the bus did not have his weapon drawn.
Rogers then got off the bus and kept shooting, according to the probable cause statement. At that point, the bus driver realized she had been shot.
In-bus security video showed only three people on the bus. The surveillance video captured Rogers shooting at the officer, bus driver and other officers outside the bus, according to the probable cause statement.
The KCPD officer and bus driver both suffered gunshot wounds to the shoulder. The officer was treated and released from the hospital the same day.
Prosecutors requested a $200,000 cash-only bond for Rogers.
