Kansas City, Missouri, man charged in Olathe woman's murder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 42-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man has been charged in the homicide of and Olathe woman.

According to the Johnson County District Attorney’s office, Clyde James Barnes, Jr. is charged with premeditated first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, unlawful tampering with electronic monitoring, criminal threat and violation of a protection order.

Jessica L. Smith was found dead in her Olathe home in the 800 block of North Hamilton Street around 3 a.m. July 5.

On March 11, Johnson County prosecutors charged Barnes with felony stalking of Smith in connection to an incident on March 5 in Olathe.

A preliminary hearing that had been scheduled for June 10 in the case was delayed due to COVID-19.

Barnes was arrested after an investigation by the Olathe Police Department and Johnson County Crime Lab.

His bond is set at $1,000,000.

A court date has not been set yet.
