KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An hours-long standoff with a man wanted for a possible sex crime ended late Monday night when officers searched a residence and did not find the man.

According to KCPD Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the department, the standoff was in the 4300 block of NE 45th Street.

Becchina said the standoff began at around 3 p.m. on Monday.

Officers responded to that area on a call involving a juvenile.

When they arrived, they met with a juvenile and their family who reported a sex offense had recently occurred.

Investigators were later led to a nearby residence where the person of interest was as well as a possible crime scene location.

During the investigation, detectives discovered the man was also wanted on an unrelated felony warrant.

Investigators also had information that he may have access to firearms.

Officers surrounded the residence to prevent an escape and tried to make contact with the man, according to Becchina.

The man refused to come out peacefully and the decision to call a standoff was made.

Police used Winnwood Skate Center as a command post, according to Becchina.
