LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - A man who previously pled guilty to killing Kansas City, Kan. Police Detective Brad Lancaster in Wyandotte County was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for additional crimes committed in Leavenworth County.

Leavenworth County District Attorney Todd Thompson said Curtis Ayers, 30, was sentenced for aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary in Leavenworth County.

“This was unimaginable series of events that this office was not willing to allow the defendant any breaks,” Thompson said in a release. “Our prayers go out to the family, friends of Brad Lancaster and the Kansas City police department.  Lancaster was truly a hero.  Our sympathy to the mother and children who also were affected.  We are lucky our victim and the children weren’t harmed.”

On May 9, 2016, Ayers broke into a house in Basehor, Kan., taking a car from a family at the home, the last part of a crime spree that started with the shooting death of Lancaster near the Hollywood Casino.

Ayers previously pled guilty to Lancaster’s murder in Wyandotte County.

He is serving life in prison without the chance for parole.
