KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After ramming several vehicles during a high-speed chase from the Northland to downtown Kansas City, Missouri, police apprehended an armed man in a stolen car near the Paseo Boulevard exit on Interstate 35 after a brief foot chase.

KCPD officers were responding to a report of a man asleep in a vehicle at a gas station near Northeast 42nd Street and North Oak Trafficway. The suspect vehicle fled when police approached.

During the ensuing high-speed chase, which reached speeds in excess of 90 mph, the drive of the vehicle, which turned out to be stolen, repeated pointed a firearm in the direction of pursuing officers.

Near the Levee Road exit just north of the Kit Bond Bridge in I-35, the suspect vehicle became more erratic, bumping and sideswiping other cars on the interstate.

The driver continued south on I-35 and across the bridge before attempting to drive across four lanes of traffic from the far right lane to make the left-hand exit at Paseo Boulevard.

Instead, the vehicle smashed into a minivan and was disabled on the left shoulder.

The suspect then fled on foot, hopping several concrete barriers and running across the northbound lanes of I-35 before two KCPD officers with weapons drawn arrested him in the grass.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

I-35 southbound was closed at Front Street until shortly before 5 p.m., creating a significant traffic backup.

Police reopened two lanes of the interstate, but the Paseo Boulevard exit from southbound I-35 remained closed as officers investigated and worked to clear the crash.
