KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Attorneys for Kylr Yust, the man accused of killing two Cass County women nearly a decade apart, filed a motion this week requesting some physical evidence to be retested, according to court records.
According to the motion filed in Cass County Circuit Court, Yust asked the state to provide his defense with the skeletal remains of both Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions, as well as hair recovered from a white SUV searched in January 2013 by the FBI.
He wants an expert to independently examine the evidence in a private laboratory, according to the motion filed Tuesday. Yust said he has obtained funds for the retesting.
Earlier this month, Yust’s attorneys said they were seeking additional DNA testing that could further delay the start of his trial.
His trial was originally scheduled to begin in November, but no new trial date has been set after discovery issues prompted a delay in September.
Yust is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abandoning a corpse in connection with the deaths of Kopetsky, 17, and Runions, 21. The remains of both women were found in 2017 in rural Cass County.
His next court hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday in Cass County.
