KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for making a racially motivated threat in September 2019.

Colton Donner, 25, faces hate crime charges in connection to the incident, which involved a Black juvenile male.

Court documents filed in the case allege that Donner told the juvenile, who was living in Paola at the time, that Paola was a “white” town. Donner allegedly threatened the victim with a knife while yelling racial slurs.

The indictment also charged Donner with one count of being a felon in possession with a firearm on Oct. 12, 2019.

Donner could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 for both charges.

“Our office will protect the federal rights of all people, regardless of race, to live peacefully in Paola or anywhere else in Kansas,” U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas Stephen McAllister said in a release. “Freedom of speech does not give anyone license to wield a weapon and threaten others because of race. Racial intimidation must have no place in America and cannot be tolerated or ignored.”
