LAWRENCE, Kan. — The woman accused of driving a car into the Kansas River, killing a 5-year-old, remains in jail on a $1 million bond.

Scharron Dingledine appeared in court on Monday. She is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 5-year-old daughter and attempted first-degree murder of her 1-year-old son, who is still in the hospital.

On Friday, witnesses told police they saw a car drive into the Kansas River in Lawrence.

Rescuers pulled Dingledine and her son from the river. They were taken to the hospital.

A dive team found her daughter’s body the next morning.

The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office said Dingledine knew what she was doing when she drove her car into the river. They also said Dingledine has no connection to the City of Lawrence or the state.

Dingledine will return to court on Tuesday.
