KANSAS CITY, Mo. — KCPD’s top brass and the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office continue looking into the actions of officers involved in Thursday’s deadly shootings.
In the meantime, 41 Action News is learning more about three individuals who lost their lives that afternoon.
Around 1 p.m. Thursday, a Kansas City police officer knocked on Grant Braaten's door on North Jackson Avenue to alert him.
"Stay in your house, don’t go outside for any reason,” Braaten said the officer told him.
He took his children upstairs and watched as a young woman tried to jump into his backyard but couldn't.
"She was wearing a bridesmaid dress that she had actually stolen from the house next door and it was falling off from her, she was topless," Braaten said.
Police said she was carrying a sword.
Braaten said officers tried to disarm her before she made it into a garage across the street him.
A negotiator then tried to have her surrender.
“He was saying ‘Hey, just come out. Put the weapon down. We want to talk to you.' He said ‘You’re going to get too hot in that garage. Just let it go,'" Braaten said.
Another neighbor recorded video of the tactical team using a battering ram to make entry into the garage. Braaten said the sword-wielding woman emerged from the damaged garage.
“She wasn't swinging,” Braaten said. “But she did have it right in front of her and she was going full speed ahead directly toward the two officers that eventually did shoot her.”
Police identified her as 28-year-old Ashley Dean Fulkerson.
About an hour later, at Barney Allis Plaza, KCPD officers shot and killed Robert White, 34, and Timothy Mosley, 33.
Mosley’s mother, Nella Mosley, told 41 Action News over the phone Monday her son was shot in the leg, stomach and head.
She said the 33-year-old barber had recently moved from Tulsa.
In Kansas City, he was working with temp agencies looking for a different career.
Nella Mosley described Thursday's shooting at a public square as “vicious” and believes “he was shot down like he was a monster”.
On Monday, a KCPD spokesperson said they hope to release more information in one or both cases soon.
