UPDATE: On Oct. 5, Authorities re-captured Brian Deconink, who escaped from the Kansas City Reentry Center over weekend. He was taken into custody by the Raytown Police Department and transferred to a Missouri Department of Corrections facility in St. Joseph, Mo.
On October 2, Brian Deconink escaped from the center by scaling onto the roof of the main building around 2:30 p.m. The Missouri Department of Corrections said in a release he had help from another offender during outside recreation. Deconink was then able to gain access to the outside perimeter of the facility.
41 Action News sat down with Erica, a woman who was visiting a loved one at the minimum-security prison when guards realized Deconink had escaped.
"We are in visit and they come and they basically escort us all out of the visiting room telling us we have to leave with no explanation," she said. "Most of all my biggest concern is with the community. They decided not to let this be known until well after 24 hours."
Last year, the center was changed from a halfway house to a minimum-security prison. Several business owners voiced concerns over the safety of the area at the time.
Deconink is 43 years old, 6’1”, 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
He's currently serving a five-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance in a correctional center from DeKalb County. His criminal history includes convictions for controlled substance, second-degree burglary, stealing, second-degree robbery, two counts of armed criminal action, property damage and resisting arrest from Jackson County. Deconink had a parole date of March 21, 2017.
If you see him, please contact local law enforcement or the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
