UPDATE 1:30 PM 7/12/2017: Officials have released the name of the man shot and killed by a Leavenworth police officer Tuesday night.

47-year-old Antonio Garcia, Jr. was the man killed in the shooting, according to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.

Garcia's wife, Heather Garcia, 41, was arrested after the incident for interference of a law enforcement officer, concealing, destroying or altering evidence and criminal damage to property.

The incident occurred just after 8 p.m. in the 1700 Block of Rose Street. The officer was called to the scene to investigate an alleged stolen vehicle, according to the KBI release. After making contact with Garcia, an altercation reportedly occurred and the officer fired at the suspect.

Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

Chief Patrick Kitchens of the Leavenworth Police Department said the involved officer was not injured in the shooting and has since been put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in these situations. The officer has been with the department for around two years, according to Kitchens.

"The officer arrived, was on scene for approximately 10 minutes or so. At some point after that, he called on the radio that shots had been fired," said Kitchens.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations has since taken over the investigation.

Leavenworth police deferred many questions about the circumstances of the shooting to the KBI, which could take days to conclude its investigation before providing further detail.
