KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police in Independence responded to a shots fired incident at the Independence Center on Monday afternoon.

According to Jack Taylor, spokesperson for the Independence Police Department, the suspect left the scene.

Taylor said an initial investigation indicates three shots were fired inside a common area of the mall. The incident happened just after 3 p.m.

After the shots were fired, the mall went into lock down protocol. Police worked with management to clear the mall.

Taylor said investigators are reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses to identify a suspect. Police believe only one person shot a weapon.
