Police: Suspect in custody after hitting Leawood officer with car, leading to chase

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Leawood officer suffered minor injuries Thursday when a suspect hit them with a car, police said.

Around 3:20 p.m., the officer tried to speak with a suspect in a parking lot near 112th Street and Nall Avenue, according to a spokesperson for the Leawood Police Department.

When the officer approached the suspect, he quickly sped off, hitting the officer with the gray Kia Optima he was driving, police said.

A description of the suspect vehicle was broadcast, Leawood police said, and Kansas City, Missouri, officers began following the car near Interstate 435 and Wornall Road.

The driver led them into Grandview, where the suspect may have hit a city bus at Grandview Road and Main Street.

The chase eventually ended in the front yard of a house near 127th Street and Grandview Road, where police took the suspect into custody.

The Leawood officer was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Leawood police said the driver is suspected in several car burglaries.
