KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Prairie Village Police Department is investigating the shooting death of an 18-year-old on Tuesday.

Police identified the victim as Kiven Maquial of Mission, Kansas, and said they were investigating his death as a homicide.

Neighbors told 41 Action News they heard gunshots around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, but police did not receive a call until after 6:15 a.m.

Officers were called to the 3500 block of Somerset Drive for a welfare check. They arrived to find an 18-year-old man lying on the ground next to Highlawn Montessori School with a gunshot wound.

Maquial was declared dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Shawnee Mission School District said Maquial had attended Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, where he was last enrolled in December 2019, and he was seeking to earn his high school diploma through Project Finish.

Neighbors told 41 Action News they believed the victim was staying at a nearby home that had several visits from first responders in previous weeks.

“I think it was last week or the week before that we had an ambulance and fire truck in the neighborhood and then a week or two before that there were a couple police officers at the location that always seems to gain a lot of attention," neighbor Dustin Gaito said.

Two nearby homes were taped off with crime scene tape on Tuesday. Neighbors told 41 Action News they believed the homes had been hit by gunfire, but Prairie Village police have not confirmed that information.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should call Prairie Village police at 913-385-4603 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Editor's note: Police initially identified the victim as a 19-year-old. The story has been updated with information from police that clarified the victim's age.
