UPDATE, NOV 8 | The people who died in the shooting have been identified as Destinii Hope, 2 months, and her mother, Maria.
ORIGINAL REPORT | Two people died in an Independence police shooting at an apartment complex on Thursday afternoon.
About 1:45 p.m., officers were called to the Oval Springs Apartments near Larkspur Lane and Missouri 291 on reports of a domestic disturbance.
No other details were immediately available, police said.
The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office said it's reviewing the shooting.
A statement said members of the office responded to the scene and met with an independent team who is investigating the incident.
The prosecutor's office said no further comment on that matter would be provided until evidence in the case was reviewed.
This includes interviews and reviews of physical evidence, including video from body cameras.
"We will move forward with our review as quickly as reasonably possible," the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. "Our condolences go out to those involved and their families."
Earlier Thursday, KSHB 41's Alyssa Jackson spoke with Carrie Lufkin, a property manager at the Oval Spring Apartments, who described the incident as "fatal domestic situation."
During the investigation, school buses and students were arriving at the apartment on the way home from school.
Lufkin was on the scene to assist them.
"I’m going to try to keep them calm and let them know everybody's safe; keep them with me so they aren't wandering around," she said. "There are a lot of kids that get off the bus and parents aren't here — they’re at work still. I'm just going to make sure they are safe. It was an awful thing to see."
Earlier Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Independence Police Department alerted media of "an officer involved shooting."
The notice was sent just after 3 p.m.
A heavy presence of law enforcement responded to the Oval Spring Apartments where the incident occurred.
No other word on what happened is immediately available.
