KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An 18-year-old man whose alleged actions initiated an Amber Alert for a 15-year-old girl has been charged with multiple felonies.
Anthony King is charged with first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Court documents say on June 21, officers were sent to 2711 Elmwood Avenue on a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 62-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He told officers King had left with his 15-year-old granddaughter, his cellphone, car and wallet.
On Monday, 41 Action News spoke to a woman who lives across the street from the victim.
“My kids heard the gun,” said Shona Jackson. “He was on the chair blood oozing from the back. They gave him a towel to try and stop the blood from leaking and after it was done there was blood all over the ground.”
The victim said he didn’t recognize King, and he didn’t know if his granddaughter had been taken against her will. KCPD issued an Amber Alert for the teen.
Court documents say King attempted to use the victim’s debit card twice on June 21 at a 7-Eleven ATM on Blue Ridge Boulevard. Bank staff told police the card had been swiped twice, but no money was taken out because of the incorrect PIN code.
Soon after the violence unfolded, Jackson’s 14-year-old son stepped up to help.
Charazzmarr McKinney told 41 Action News he knew the victim from the neighborhood and called her phone after hearing about the incident.
“I didn’t feel like texting because a lot was going on,” he said. “It was not good because she started crying. I felt the pain.”
McKinney said after he told the teenage girl about the details of the crime and police response, she was confused about the incident.
“She had asked me questions like, ‘What do you mean? Where’s my mom? Where’s my grandpa? Is my mom okay? Can I talk to her?’,” he said. “She seemed shocked. She seemed real surprised. Hurt.”
McKinney later handed the phone off to police so investigators could speak to the girl.
On June 22, officers were sent to Blue Ridge Boulevard and Bennington Ave. on a reported abandoned vehicle near Burke Elementary School. When officers arrived, they found the victim’s car.
On June 23, the 15-year-old girl turned herself into Kansas City police.
That same day, officers were patrolling the area of Red Bridge and Hickman Mills Drive when they saw King. Court documents say when King noticed officers, he ran and grabbed the front of his waistband. As officers pursued him, they heard something hit the ground. King tried to hide in a McDonald’s bathroom but was arrested by officers.
Court document say officers searched the path where King ran and found a gun. The gun had a round in the chamber and six in the magazine; four of the live rounds matched the make of casings found at the crime scene.
King admitted to having the gun and acknowledged he wasn’t supposed to have one as a term of his probation; he’s a convicted felon in Missouri, according to court documents. King denied any knowledge or involvement in the robbery and shooting.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $100,000.
After hearing the weekend developments and the arrest of King, Shona Jackson said she was glad to hear the case had ended.
“I was overwhelmed and very happy that (the arrest) happened. My heart was at ease,” she said. “I was calm and I’m worry-free now.”
As of Monday night, a KCPD spokesperson said the teenage girl was still in police custody.
