UPDATE 11:50 P.M. 5/13/2017: The child killed in a shooting Friday has been identified as 3-year-old Marcus Haislip III.
Police are searching for the gunman who shot two men and fatally wounded a young boy Friday afternoon.
The victims were taken to Research Medical Center by private means. Police late Friday said the surviving victims are the child's father and great uncle.
Officers said the shooting occurred in the area of 54th and Park around 4 p.m. The two men and the child were driving down the street when someone opened fire on the car.
Police said someone in the car shot back and then the car headed to Research Medical Center.
“I was standing in my kitchen I just heard Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Pow! Pow!” Pamela Sanders, who lives in the area, said.
The sight is way too familiar to Sanders; her son was shot just a month ago. He survived, but the child struck Friday didn’t.
“I feel for her [victim’s mother]. I feel so sorry for her,” Sanders said.
According to KCPD figures, this is the first victim under the age of 16 killed so far in 2017.
“I don’t know at what point in our community that we have gotten to where we have child homicides,” Captain Stacey Graves, a KCPD spokeswoman, said at the scene.
There were seven homicide victims under the age of 16 in 2015 and 2016.
“Situations like these where someone is getting shot at and a child is caught in the crossfire either way it's a senseless death,” Graves said.
Police are still looking for the suspect.
If you know anything about this shooting, call police or the KC Crimestoppers Hotline (816) 474-TIPS (8477).
