KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer is accused of assaulting his romantic partner with a deadly weapon during a domestic violence incident.
Deotis Brown, 33, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim for an incident that happened in February.
Brown, who's been employed with KCKPD since 2017, is also involved in a separate incident in Jackson County that took place Sept. 2.
In that incident, he faces two counts of second-degree domestic assault and one count of third-degree domestic assault.
"Domestic violence thrives when it is not taken seriously and it is not exposed openly," said Mark Dupree, Wyandotte County District Attorney. "My office will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law."
KCKPD Chief Karl Oakman said the incident is a reminder of the consequences domestic violence can have on the community.
"No one is immune to domestic violence, it is an issue that's affecting a lot of lives here in Kansas City, Kansas," Oakman said. "When you look at our homicides for this year, roughly 34% are domestic violence related."
Oakman said the department is using money from a federal grant to combat domestic violence.
Brown, a patrol officer, is suspended without pay. He was arrested Thursday afternoon.
