KC metro school districts offer free breakfast and lunch

Posted

You can almost hear Alice Cooper singing it:  School’s Out For Summer!

But, where’s the lyric about free breakfasts and lunches?

That’s the tune they’re whistling in the Fort Osage School District.

Starting today, Wednesday June 29 through August 5, young people 18 and under can eat breakfast from 8-9 am and lunch from noon to 1 pm…for free!

It is part of the Summer Food Service Program funded through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

According to the head summer lunch lady, Joanne Johnson, for many children, the only nutritious and delicious chance for a meal during the academic year is at school.

But, when summer comes, kids still need to eat and that’s where the hot season servings come to the rescue.

At four different locations-Blue Hills Elementary; Cler-Mont Elementary; Elm Grove Elementary; 1st Baptist Church of Buckner-hundreds will find their hunger satisfied.

Joanne Johnson says they see older siblings walk in with their little brothers and sisters.  Some children walk up by themselve, others ride their bikes.

Adults can also get a good deal on a square meal:  $2.05 for breakfast and $2.80 for lunch.

A different summer song comes to mind:  Summertime and the livin’ is easy.

Thanks to these Free Summer Meals, that can be a little truer for so many families.
