My husband, Ed, and I took Newsome's House Calls on the road Friday to Saint Luke's East Hospital. Our House Calls initiative is a breast cancer awareness program celebrating my five-year anniversary as a breast cancer survivor.
Five years ago on June 17 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This year I received another good report from my radiologist that I am still cancer-free.
Dr., Ruby Meierotto has been my radiologist from the beginning in 2011. She walked us through the process as we went live from the mammography room. I received a 3-D screening mammogram called Tomosynthesis. The rotating arm during radiation gives the radiologist a 3-D image so she can have a more complete image of the breast - top to bottom and side to side.
Our goal of showing the mammogram live is to encourage women to get a mammogram. I was a little nervous because you never know what the results will be. But I knew that no matter what, I would have the knowledge to be empowered to act.
I always tell women not to fear a diagnosis of breast cancer - be afraid of being diagnosed too late.
My husband and I are thrilled that I'm still cancer-free. I will continue getting annual mammograms and doing my monthly breast self-exams.
