KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Sun Fresh at the Red Bridge Shopping Center is helping those who have recently been laid off due to COVID-19.

As of Friday, the grocery store hired eight people who were laid off from nearby restaurants.

The hiring is mutually beneficial, because it gives those who were unemployed work while keeping the store afloat.

Store manager Kathy Scott said she is happy to be in a position to add the new faces to the team.

"I'm the only one that provides food for my family, as a family of four, and I'm very happy to be here," Ishmael Martinez, a former cook at Caleb's Breakfast, said.

The new hires are allowed to wear the shirts from their former business and Scott said they can count on being employed through the pandemic.
