KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City skyline could continue to change with a proposal to build a new 14-story apartment building in the Crossroads.
"We are just now seeing new construction for housing, after decades of no new construction at all, let alone for residential,” said David Johnson with the Crossroads Community Association.
A lot is happening in the Crossroads beyond the monthly First Friday events. Just a few blocks from downtown, more people want to live in the area.
To meet the demand, Copaken – Brooks wants to build a 14-floor apartment building on the corner of 18th and Walnut.
"It’s a debate about the future of the Crossroads and how tall is too tall, and so we are having that conversation right now,” said Johnson.
Johnson said the developer recently spoke at a community meeting about the plan. He said some are concerned about the building’s height.
“We are hoping the developer listens and takes those concerns to heart,” Johnson said. “The developer has a good reputation, with doing another project in the Crossroads that is 12 stories, which everyone seems to be OK with. We are hoping to move forward at some point.”
The 12-story development is being built on Wyandotte.
“Could be interesting. I just hope the prices stay right,” said Clement Joly.
Joly lives in the Crossroads. He said more housing is needed.
“I think it would not be a bad idea,” Joly said. “Downtown is expanding a lot these days with hotels, restaurants -- parking is plenty full."
Jon Copaken with Copaken-Brooks said, “we have been and do look forward to working with the community.”
“I am excited to have more neighbors. I tell people it is just working through these issues with the rest of the community, and I think we will get there,” said Johnson.
The plan has not been formally proposed to the city.
